In this article we take a look at some parent tips for reading at home.
Reading is important and it should be fun.
Many experts agree that the more a child thinks of reading as a fun activity, the better he/she is likely to become at it.
It is important for parents to understand how to make their child cultivate a reading habit at home.
We have put together some parent tips to help reading at home.
Create a book culture
The first step to getting your child to read more is if he/she becomes very familiar with books.
The more they see books around the house the more they will be willing to read them.
You can have a small library of classic stories and some beside your kid’s bed.
Join your local library
In addition to having a mini home library, get your child a library card.
They will have access to hundreds of amazing books, comics, and other helpful educational materials.
Also, they will have the opportunity to choose what they want to read and develop their own interests.
Know their interests
Try to figure out your child’s interests so that you can help them find the right books.
It doesn’t really matter if it’s poetry, fiction, non-fiction or comic books.
Encourage them to read anything
As your child continues to show an eagerness to read, encourage him/her to read anything.
This could be anything from the information on their favorite cereal box to any book.
Do not place a limit to what they can read as long as it is within their grade.
Do not rule out graphic novels, comics, fiction, leaflets or magazines.
All kinds of reading are good for them.
Get comfortable
While you are snuggled up in a comfortable position, get your child a comfy position or space to read on their own.
Whether it’s in bed, on the sofa or on a beanbag.
At home is where they should feel more relaxed to read as they like.
Ask questions
As you read to your child, ask him questions about the story to keep them interested in it.
The more often you do this the more they expect to be asked questions about the story, and better they learn to understand.
Read whenever you can
Have a book or magazine with for those days when you and your child have to wait for some time to see the doctor, or on a flight to another city.
Read their favorites
Always go back to their favorite stories, because why not?
Kids love their favorite stories and they hardly ever get tired of them.
They will at some point be able to memorize the words with time, which is a good thing for them.
This can also help them to build confidence and fluency.
Read bedtime stories
Read with your kids as often as you can at bedtime.
Apart from helping you bond with your child, it is a great way to end the day.
Read a lot of rhyming books
Read books with a lot of rhymes and repetition with your child in order to help them become familiar with words and phrases.
Rhyming books help kids memorize words better.
